Vehicle Inspection Gateway (2024)

Q: Are receipts from internet sources (online purchases) accepted?

Answer

Yes if:
(New parts) the receipt/invoice identifies the part, the seller by name, lists the transaction specific number, and the transaction date.
(Used parts) the receipt/invoice identifies the part to include the VIN of the donor vehicle, the seller by name, lists the transaction specific number, and the transaction date.
All internet receipts must be printed. We cannot accept emails or faxes.

Q: Does the owner of the vehicle have to bring the vehicle to the inspection?

Answer

No. Any licensed driver may bring the vehicle to the inspection with the owner’s permission. The person presenting the vehicle will need to bring all required documents and a printed copy of the owner’s drivers’ license to the inspection.

Q: Is an assigned title acceptable for a salvage inspection?

Answer

No. The name on the front of the title must be the current owner of the vehicle prior to scheduling the inspection appointment.

Q: Where do I purchase the Vehicle Inspection Receipt?

Answer

Any Ohio Deputy Registrar's location for $50.00 plus registrar’s fees.

Q: If the vehicle fails inspection for any reason, will I have to pay for another inspection receipt?

Answer

No. You will be advised what needs to be corrected, but you will not forfeit your inspection receipt until the vehicle is re-inspected. Please note that when an inspection fails, the inspection receipt is tied to the failed vehicle, and can only be used for a re-inspection of the same vehicle.

Q: How do I obtain a salvage title?

Answer

You will need to apply for a salvage title at a local clerk of courts title office.
You must have an active salvage title, in the current owner’s name, prior to scheduling a salvage inspection appointment.

Q: Does a vehicle have to be ready for highway use prior to the inspection?

Answer

Yes. The vehicle must be compliant with Ohio Revised Code section 4513.at the time of inspection

Q: My Vehicle Inspection Receipt does not work. Is something wrong with my receipt?

Answer

No. If an error of “Receipt was not found” appears, verify that the Driver’s License in the “Driver’s License #” space is that of the receipt purchaser. Driver’s License letters must be capitalized. Use the calendar button to choose the receipt issue date. If the Driver’s License Number is correct and capitalized, but still does not work, remove the Driver’s License Number and leave space blank.

Q: I’m having trouble making my appointment online. What do I do if it says my Title/VIN is wrong?

Answer

An error of “The information provided is incorrect, please check your Title/VIN and resubmit?” means the title is not valid for a salvage inspection or the information entered does not match the title system. Only Ohio titles are accepted for salvage inspections. Titles must be active with a type of Salvage, Salvage Duplicate, or Salvage Replacement. Any other title is not eligible for a salvage inspection. If you have an active Ohio Salvage (Salvage, Salvage Duplicate, or Salvage Replacement) title, verify that the title type is correct. The title type is found in the top center of the blue title; it may have SALVAGE on the right and left sides, but the center lists the actual salvage title type. If your name is not typed on the front of the title, but located on the back, this is considered an assigned title. Appointments cannot be made on assigned titles. You must get the Ohio Salvage title put in your name before scheduling. Lastly, verify that the VIN number is correct. In most cases, the letter “O” is not used. Often the letter “S” and the number “5” are also confused. Look very closely at the VIN on the title to ensure it has been typed correctly.

Q: Can I get a sooner appointment?

Answer

Possibly. You use the “Reschedule” option on the website. Use the drop down to select “By Owner Identity.” Enter the requested info and select “search.” Your appointment will appear at the bottom. Select “reschedule.” Choose the location and search available appointments. After selecting the new appointment date and time, click “reschedule.” All cancellations are immediately added to the website for availability to schedule or reschedule. You are also welcome to schedule at any of our locations for sooner availability.

Q: Can I drive my car to the appointment?

Answer

Yes. The Vehicle Inspection Receipt states: “In accordance with Section 4505.11 F of the Ohio Revised Code, the possessor of this receipt may operate a motor vehicle to an inspection site and to the assigned owner’s residence or business without displaying registration on the date of inspection only.” Salvage titled vehicles cannot be driven in any other circ*mstance. When driving to the inspection site, there should be no registration displayed (license plates).

Q: What if I don’t have receipts for the parts I put on the car?

Answer

The primary function of a salvage or self-assembled inspection is to verify ownership of the vehicle and its parts. Parts that have been replaced must have accompanying documentation to prove they have not been stolen. Without documentation, the vehicle could fail the inspection and possibly be seized.

Q: I missed my inspection, can I reschedule?

Answer

Yes. A new appointment can be scheduled on the same receipt, but cannot be scheduled until the day after the appointment. The receipt is treated as if it was never used, therefore you will need to follow the “Schedule” prompts.

Q: Can I schedule a salvage inspection with an out of state title?

Answer

No. Salvage inspections can only be scheduled with Ohio salvage titles. If you have an out of state title, you must first go to the BMV for a VIN verification. Take that form to the title agency for your Ohio salvage title.

Q: I repaired my car, do I need a salvage or self-assembled inspection?

Answer

Salvage inspections are for vehicles that have an Ohio salvage title. Self-assembled inspections are for vehicles that are built from the ground up.

Q: Does my inspection receipt expire?

Answer

No. Vehicle Inspection Receipts do not expire and can be used at any time.

Q: What do I do if I get an error that says my name is incorrect?

Answer

Be sure that your name is printed on the front of the title. If your name is on the back of the title, that is called an assigned title. We do not inspect vehicles with assigned titles. You will need to go to the title office to have your name transferred to the front of the title. If your name is printed on the front of the title, look to see if a middle name or middle initial is listed on the title. Be sure to enter the middle name as it is on the title. Sometimes the middle name may be included with the first name, so try entering the first and middle names as they are typed in the “first name” box. In this case, the middle name box will be left blank. EXAMPLE: Jason Michael Smith typed on the title could be: First: Jason Middle: Michael Last: Smith or First: Jason Michael Last: Smith

Q: Can I schedule my appointment for a salvage inspection before switching my title to salvage?

Answer

No. The vehicle title must be switched to an Ohio salvage title before scheduling for a salvage inspection. Titles must be active with a type of Salvage, Salvage Duplicate, or Salvage Replacement. Any other title is not eligible for a salvage inspection.

Q: What is the identity number?

Answer

The identity number is the Driver’s License number. An Ohio Driver’s License number is typically made up of two letters, followed by six numbers (ex: AA123456). If you are a dealer, it will most likely be asking for a Dealer Permit number (ex: UD123456). If you select “Dealer Permit Number” from the drop down and it does not accept it, try selecting “Driver’s License” from the drop down and putting the UD number where it asks for the identity number.

Q: I lost my Vehicle Inspection Receipt, can I get a reprint?

Answer

No. “If this receipt is lost, stolen, or mutilated beyond recognition, applicant must apply for and purchase another inspection receipt. No refunds will be issued.” This is typed on the Vehicle Inspection Receipt. The Ohio BMV and OSHP do not have the ability to reprint receipts.

Q: My preferred location does not have any available appointments. What should I do?

Answer

If you are looking for the soonest available appointment, do not select a time and/or date in the drop down box. The website will automatically select the soonest available appointments for the selected location/s. If a location does not show appointments, no appointments are available for that location and/or time frame. You are permitted to select an appointment at any of the locations available, you are not required to have the inspection at your closest location. If you choose not to have the inspection completed at a different location, you may continue to check the website for cancelled or new appointments that may become available.
